Before Hiring an EIC Consultant, Ask One Question: Do They Reduce Risk or Just Sell Confidence?
In EIC Accelerator, choosing the wrong consultant is expensive. Not only because of the fee, but because a weak advisor can cost you months of management time, one of your application attempts, and a false sense that your project is stronger than it really is.
This is also why comparing consultants by “success rate” is often misleading. A serious consultant should explain something uncomfortable from the start: reaching the final stage and winning the final stage are not the same thing.
A consultant can help you build a case that is clear, credible and fundable. But the final interview is still defended by the founders, under pressure, in front of human evaluators, technical experts and jury members.
That human factor is exactly why EIC is not just a writing exercise. A strong consultant understands that the process is human-centric. The file must be understandable, believable and convincing to different people with different sensitivities, expectations and objections.
A good EIC consultant is not just a good writer. They should be able to:
→ challenge whether your case is truly ready before pushing you to apply
→ identify likely NO GO risks early
→ translate complex technology into evaluator-friendly logic
→ develop the extra evidence and supporting documentation needed to make the proposal credible
→ prepare the founders for Technical Expert scrutiny and the final jury interview
The EIC template is only the minimum. Strong applications are often supported by deeper work behind the file: better competition analysis, stronger market evidence, clearer risk logic, better technical substantiation, and internal supporting material that helps the team defend the case consistently.
So how do you spot a dangerous consultant? Usually by what they do not do.
⚠️ They focus on selling, not screening.
⚠️ They do not perform a real eligibility and risk assessment before the project starts.
⚠️ They talk about compliance, but not evaluator psychology.
⚠️ They treat the job as document production, not as building a credible funding case by adding strategic extra documentation (FTOs, Market Studies, Competitor Analysis, Media Documentation, etc).
A good consultant creates clarity early. Sometimes that means saying “not yet”. Sometimes it means showing you the red flags before you spend serious time and money.
And that is usually a much better sign of quality than hearing a confident sales pitch about high win rates.
